Sniffari Weekend

  • Wilderness Institute at Santa Fe Treehouse Camp (map)

Join the canine nosework movement! This two day workshop will introduce you and your doggy best friend to fun, enriching scent-based activities you can do anywhere!

The workshop is designed for companion/pet dogs with no background or training in detection work. NOTE: All dogs benefit from sniffing! We work with each dog individually, so being able to sit quietly in a class setting is not a pre-requisite.

We will start with a workshop on Saturday morning discovering the amazing world of canine scent work. Using a unique scent to introduce your dog to searching for a specific odor we will coach the handler on observing the changes in the dogs behavior that indicate they are working the target odor. The teamwork that is developed helps build an amazing bond between person and dog.

On Saturday afternoon and Sunday we will set up multiple opportunities for the dog/handler teams to search areas of the camp for hidden odor. Instructors will work with the teams to support successful, happy dogs and enhance the handlers learning and observation of what the dog is communicating. Participants will be invited to observe other teams searching and interact with the instructors as time permits.

Sniffing happens everywhere. Participants will receive a kit containing a sample of the odor and a small container for hiding as well as handouts with additional information on playing with your dog at home, or where ever you go from here!
